First off, the Chicago Gay Hockey Association is a force to be reckoned with. Not only are they on the ice in a competitive league at Johnny's Ice House kicking ass weekly, they are constantly hosting fundraisers and events, raising awareness in the gay community and throughout Chicago. As a legit non-profit organization, these guys are dedicated to breaking down barriers and stereotypes alike, and really foster a sense of inclusiveness and acceptance for everyone involved.
Enough gushing about my hockey team. We got together to shoot these two videos for the You Can Play Project, and the It Gets Better campaign. While similar in tone, each video has a unique message: You Can Play is focused on sports, and the idea that sexual orientation should never be a factor in your athletic career, while It Gets Better is simply a message of hope for LGBT youth.
We shot these at Lincolnwood with the help of a few lights and a smoke machine manned by my brother Johnny and the incomparable Mike Handler. Directing was simple after Anthony Alfano and Andrew Sobotka crafted a solid script and we got some excellent deliveries from our teammates. I also ended up using my tripod on ice, which was like having a limitless dolly.
